A COFFEE CUP COLLECTING CONTAINER DESIGNED BY KAISA PIETILÄ WON AN AWARD AT THE SCANSTAR 2018 COMPETITION IN DENMARK

The ScanStar 2018 competition awards were handed out during the FoodTech trade fair organised in Herning in Denmark on 13 November 2018. Kaisa Pietilä from Adara won an award for a fully recyclable coffee cup collecting container that also serves as a bin that doesn’t need to be disassembled separately. Instead, it is pulped as it is.

ADARA WON THE SCANSTAR 2018 AWARD FOR BEST PACKAGING IN THE NORDIC COUNTRIES

Adara Pakkaus Oy won the ScanStar 2018 award in a competition for Nordic packaging industry operators with a collecting container for recyclable coffee cups designed for Kotkamills Oy. Participants at the joint Nordic competition included a total of 23 packaging solutions from Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

The packaging was designed by Kaisa Pietilä from Adara Pakkaus Oy. The fully recyclable coffee cup collecting container also serves as a bin that doesn’t need to be disassembled separately. Instead, it is pulped as it is. Wood fibres in cups and the recycling container can thus be used as raw material for new paper or cardboard products. This unique idea helps save the world, one coffee cup at a time.

Comments from the jury: “Cardboard cups placed in the collecting container after use are stacked up, so there is no cup chaos as there would be if they were thrown into an ordinary dustbin. This is an excellent way to collect used cups and take them for recycling. The container and the cups can be placed in a cardboard recycling container as they are. The surfaces of the container also provide good possibilities for branding and communicating the product features of the cups.”

Sustainable development and usability remained a trend in the competition entries. This time, the materials of the entries were dominated by fibres – only a few packaging products in the competition were made from plastic. In its judging criteria, the competition’s jury highlighted the packaging’s protection and usability properties, a good user experience, the information provided by the packaging, sustainable development, and easy disposability after use.

ScanStar is a joint Nordic packaging competition that has been held since 1969. The competition is open for all packaging designed or manufactured in Scandinavia. Industry organisations from the packaging sector in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark take turns in organising the competition. In Finland, the competition is represented by the Finnish Packaging Association.
